Admission to the Ph.D. program requires completing a master's degree and receiving faculty endorsement. The curriculum offers personalized flexibility, mandating 72 post-baccalaureate credits - with a minimum of 45 graded course credits and 9 dissertation credits. Eight specialization areas are available: (1) global studies, migration, and transnational research, (2) demographics and geography, (3) health sciences, aging studies, disability research, (4) educational and family systems, (5) social stratification, (6) political economy and governance, (7) methodological studies, and (8) theoretical frameworks. The program promotes teaching and research development through assistantships, involvement with Maxwell School's interdisciplinary research centers, or faculty collaborations. Typically, comprehensive exams occur after three years (or two for M.A. holders), assessing two focus areas - one from the core concentrations and another specialized field approved by the exam committee. Additionally, candidates must complete an advanced methods course, such as statistical analysis, qualitative methodologies, or historical research techniques.
