The Physics Ph.D. is a research-focused program where students conduct original investigations and present their findings in a dissertation that contributes to the field of physics.
Our curriculum is designed to rapidly move students from classroom learning to conducting autonomous research with faculty supervision.
Upon admission, students complete an assessment test to evaluate their undergraduate physics foundation. Those who demonstrate sufficient proficiency will enroll in advanced 600- and 700-level courses during their first year, leading to a qualifying examination in their second year. Students needing additional preparation may take a combination of 500-, 600-, and 700-level courses before attempting the exam in their third year. Applicants holding a Master's in Physics or equivalent coursework may take the qualifying exam immediately upon enrollment. Successful candidates can petition to bypass core graduate courses, while those who don't pass must complete the coursework and retake the exam the subsequent year.
