Syracuse University's 72-credit doctoral program in Marriage and Family Therapy aims to develop scholars capable of advancing theoretical knowledge, research, and educational practices in the field. The curriculum primarily equips graduates for academic, supervisory, and research roles within graduate institutions, training centers, and healthcare environments. Building on a clinical Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, the program offers in-depth training in advanced therapeutic theories and specialized research methods for studying treatment processes and outcomes.
The Ph.D. program mandates completion of 72 credits, with potential transfer of up to 33 credits from a relevant M.A. program. Coursework includes 12 credits each of advanced theory/practice and research methodology, 3 elective credits, 6 practicum credits, and 6 dissertation credits. Students must also complete a 9-month clinical internship, pass doctoral qualifying exams, and successfully defend their dissertation through oral examination.
