Syracuse University's Spanish Education program is a collaborative initiative between the School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences, allowing students to obtain a single Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors. This program fulfills the educational criteria for New York State certification to teach Spanish in secondary schools (grades 7-12). To achieve state teaching certification, candidates must also pass certification exams, submit an application, and undergo a background check.
The program's key components include:
General education courses and electives
Major coursework in Spanish language, literature, and cultural studies
Specialized education classes and classroom practicums
When scheduling classes, students should note that a minimum of 6 education credits, including student teaching, must be completed during the fall semester of their senior year to qualify for spring student teaching. Ideally, most Spanish content courses should be finished by junior year's end.
