The Modern Foreign Language major enables students to merge two language minors (such as French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish) into a single comprehensive major. This program is perfect for those aiming to achieve proficiency in multiple foreign languages, whether as their primary focus or alongside other majors. Students not only build communication skills in two modern languages but also acquire deep understanding of diverse literary traditions and cultural contexts, hone analytical abilities for literature and culture, and cultivate global perspectives. Prior knowledge of the chosen languages isn't required—with proper planning, students can start learning both languages at SU and successfully complete the major.
Graduates with a Modern Foreign Language degree are prepared to pursue advanced studies in various disciplines like linguistics, literature, art history, law, philosophy, international affairs, and political science. Their multilingual abilities open doors to rewarding careers worldwide in sectors such as government, diplomacy, policy development, healthcare, translation, media, social services, and creative industries like art, cinema, and fashion.
