The Maxwell Program in Citizenship and Civic Engagement (CCE) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate B.A. program that allows students to pursue dual majors through the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the College of Arts and Sciences. This program provides a customized academic path for students to examine and actively participate in societal betterment through both theoretical and hands-on approaches.
Each year's cohort is capped at 30 students, with CCE class sizes typically between nine and 17 participants. Prospective students can apply to CCE either during their final year of high school or, for current SU students, prior to completing their second year. Those accepted combine their CCE studies with another major of their choosing to investigate its relationship with civic participation and community involvement.
The curriculum includes eight core courses (totaling 24 credits) that expose CCE majors to key interdisciplinary themes within the Maxwell School, covering areas such as participatory democracy, community service, activism, leadership in various sectors, data analysis, policy evaluation, conflict resolution, public governance, and nonprofit operations. With these courses available every semester, CCE students enjoy scheduling flexibility that accommodates study abroad opportunities or participation in the Maxwell in Washington program.
