Anthropology examines the full spectrum of human existence across time and cultures. Our undergraduate program provides comprehensive courses spanning all major subfields: physical anthropology (human evolution and biological diversity), archaeology (investigating past societies through material evidence), linguistics (analyzing language structure, history, and social roles), cultural anthropology (studying modern communities), and applied anthropology (using anthropological approaches to address practical challenges). Faculty and graduate research encompasses diverse subjects worldwide, from Jamaican slave communities to Indian gender development, Brazilian religious movements to Nepalese sustainable farming, Kenyan forestry to Syracuse's Underground Railroad. Studies occur across multiple continents including Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe, and the Caribbean.
Students typically apply for the MA IR combined degree program in their junior year spring semester after declaring their major and completing 75 bachelor's degree credits.
Prospective applicants should consult with the MA IR program's admissions director beforehand. Required materials usually include two Syracuse faculty recommendations, a resume, personal statement, and academic transcripts. Syracuse University students are exempt from submitting GRE and TOEFL scores.
