This interdisciplinary program draws courses from anthropology, art, economics, English and creative writing, history, music, philosophy, political science, and sociology departments. Working closely with your faculty advisor, you can customize the curriculum to match your academic interests, culminating in a senior seminar focused on a specific aspect or era of American culture.
The program's interdisciplinary nature opens doors to diverse internship opportunities in museums, publishing houses, government offices, and beyond. SUNY Oswego's location in the historic city of Oswego - once a hub for trade, commerce, and military strategy - provides an ideal setting for this study. Local historical sites include Fort Ontario, a crucial military post in early conflicts; the Safe Haven Museum, honoring a unique WWII refugee shelter; and ties to the Underground Railroad network.
