Research in this field focuses on the production processes of pulp and paper. Core curriculum for students emphasizes this discipline, supplemented with specialized courses in chemistry, polymer science, chemical engineering, process automation, applied mathematics, and computing applications. Ongoing investigations explore sulfur-free pulping methods, biological pulping techniques, byproduct recovery of chemicals and energy, how wet pressing and drying affect paper characteristics, processing tropical hardwoods, and digital modeling of paper production systems. These studies are supported by a fully equipped pilot plant featuring two operational paper machines, a high-pressure refiner, and comprehensive ancillary apparatus.
