Labor and employment law encompasses the comprehensive legal framework governing interactions between employers, workers, and labor organizations, along with their respective rights and responsibilities.
The Labor and Employment Law (LEL) field incorporates three legal areas: doctrines addressing fundamental employer-employee relationships (including employment-at-will principles and termination-related contract/tort claims), specific statutes regulating individual employment (covering anti-discrimination laws, workplace safety regulations, workers' compensation, and employee benefits), and legislation concerning labor unions and collective bargaining agreements.
Beyond classroom instruction, LEL-focused students are highly encouraged to pursue externships and summer employment to refine their skills and improve job opportunities. Our students typically find available semester-long externship positions and summer roles in this practice area. Engaging with law journals (particularly by authoring Notes or Comments on LEL subjects) and participating in advocacy competitions is also strongly recommended.
