Our program offers students a comprehensive grounding in both classical and contemporary philosophy, covering logic, ethics, and everything in between. You'll have the flexibility to customize your studies through diverse electives spanning aesthetics, feminist theory, environmental ethics, biomedical ethics, and existential thought. The curriculum extends beyond Western traditions to explore Eastern philosophies like Confucianism and Buddhism, as well as indigenous perspectives including Africana philosophy and Native American spiritual traditions. Upper-level seminars allow deep dives into seminal thinkers—from Plato and Aristotle to Kant and Wittgenstein—or specialized topics such as Deception and Discourse, Advanced Symbolic Logic, or Ecological Feminism.
Our professors will immerse you in both continental and analytic philosophical approaches, while intimate seminar-style classes will broaden your intellectual horizons and test your assumptions. The program incorporates experiential learning through community-engaged courses, professional internships, guest lectures, and educational excursions that tap into Boston's vibrant scholarly ecosystem. Your academic journey culminates in the Senior Symposium, where you'll showcase original research before faculty and graduates. Upon completion, you'll be exceptionally prepared for advanced study in law or academia, or for professional paths in media, public service, healthcare policy, or legal practice.
Philosophy majors will:
Master logical frameworks and apply them to philosophical and interdisciplinary discourse, Gain international viewpoints on philosophical traditions, Engage in rigorous classroom dialogues with fellow students and instructors, Sharpen analytical abilities to evaluate and formulate compelling arguments, Examine moral reasoning and the foundations of ethical systems, Refine written and verbal communication proficiency, Articulate and defend original philosophical viewpoints in academic settings.
