The Media/Film program equips students with insights into media's political, social, and cultural impacts while training them to become skilled visual storytellers, focusing on documentary and news production through practical video projects.
Students in Media and Film produce meaningful stories and build engaging narratives, taking advantage of nonfiction filmmaking's current renaissance. They also examine media as both a catalyst for change and a business sector. Collaborating with like-minded peers, they bring ambitious ideas to life in an encouraging setting. As they explore their personal backgrounds, students cultivate a distinctive creative perspective. They learn from award-winning faculty with published works and industry professionals actively working in the field. On-campus roles like TV studio crew, media lab aides, and research assistants provide additional skill development.
Participants can exhibit their films at Northeastern festivals—a growing hub for nonfiction cinema—and share scholarly work at conferences worldwide. Alumni pursue careers as directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, and media entrepreneurs, securing positions with PBS, HBO, university media departments, and founding their own production companies serving nonprofits and corporations. Join our community as we use storytelling to create positive change.
