The Media/Film program equips students to comprehend media's political, social, and cultural impacts while cultivating their skills as innovative visual storytellers, focusing mainly on documentary and news formats through practical video production training. Students in this program produce meaningful stories and construct engaging narratives, taking advantage of the current renaissance in nonfiction filmmaking. They also examine media as both catalysts for change and business enterprises, collaborating with like-minded peers in a nurturing setting to bring ambitious projects to life. As students explore their personal backgrounds, they cultivate a distinctive creative perspective. They learn from acclaimed faculty members—award winners and published authors—and industry-active professionals. On-campus roles like TV studio production assistants, media lab aides, and research assistants provide additional skill-building opportunities. Students can exhibit their films at Northeastern festivals—a growing hub for nonfiction cinema—and share scholarly work at conferences nationwide and abroad. Alumni pursue careers as directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, and media entrepreneurs, securing positions with PBS series (American Experience), networks (HBO), and institutional media divisions, or launching their own production firms serving nonprofits and corporations. Join us in shaping a better future through the power of narrative.
