Art captures the diverse heritage of humanity's past and present across civilizations. The study of art history explores how visual creations and structures convey meaning and serve societal purposes: educating, inspiring, elevating, and provoking. As an art history student, you'll discover different cultures, historical periods, and worldviews. You'll prepare for international study during your junior year and cultivate lifelong global and historical awareness.
Art history students hone sharp observational abilities along with strong research, analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills—foundations for numerous professions. Suffolk's alumni have pursued graduate studies in art history, archival science, museum studies, and legal fields. Many have built rewarding careers in arts organizations including galleries, museums, auction firms, archives, and cultural nonprofits.
Suffolk offers abundant resources to enhance your learning journey. The Art & Design Department's recently upgraded studios and workshops welcome creatively inclined students. You can also combine your art history major with an Arts Administration minor, drawing on courses from Suffolk's Business School.

Demonstrate the ability to examine and understand visual communication within its cultural framework using multiple methodologies (iconographic, socio-historical, feminist, etc.), Recognize art's varied societal functions, from political messaging to social commentary, factual recording to personal expression, and spiritual enlightenment to aesthetic pleasure.
