The Department of Music provides academic pathways primarily culminating in Doctor of Philosophy degrees for Music History and Theory as well as Composition. Additionally, it offers Doctor of Musical Arts programs focused on Music Performance. Students can also pursue Master's Degrees in Music History and Theory, Composition, and Music Performance. These programs stem from Stony Brook's unique collaboration between academic and conservatory traditions. With an accomplished faculty spanning music history, theory, ethnomusicology, composition, and performance, the department fosters interdisciplinary connections between traditionally segregated musical fields. Performance curricula incorporate academic elements, while graduate classes bring together students from diverse specializations. Many courses feature collaborative teaching approaches, exploring subjects through multiple academic lenses, including ethnomusicology, cultural studies, and feminist theory. The department prioritizes cross-disciplinary learning, supporting students in cultivating expertise across multiple musical domains. Doctoral candidates pursuing dual specializations—particularly those combining performance with another discipline—have access to various academic options, including dual degree programs.
