The full-time program kicks off with mandatory graduate coursework during both summer sessions, then progresses through the fall and spring terms. Designed as a generalist program, it offers advanced training that prepares graduates for immediate career entry or further studies in diverse fields including law, business, medicine, social work, and psychology. While the program doesn't provide specialized licensure training, MA candidates gain comprehensive foundational knowledge in psychology through our standard graduate course offerings. Housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, the Psychology Department ranks among Stony Brook's largest graduate programs, having conferred over 800 doctoral degrees since its inception four decades ago. Recent enrollment demographics show about 60% female students, 15% from minority groups, and 10% international students. The department operates through four distinct programs: Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Science, Integrative Neuroscience, and Social and Health Psychology. Applicants must choose one primary program area but can pursue cross-disciplinary training when beneficial. The curriculum and research opportunities are designed to fulfill PhD requirements in any of these four specializations.
