The Science Education Ph.D. Program at Stony Brook delivers an intensive graduate curriculum focused on fundamental principles from Science Education alongside cutting-edge disciplines like Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER) and Learning Sciences. This program prepares graduates for careers as: i) university or college science educators leading teacher training initiatives and collaborating with schools on regional, state, and national science programs, ii) research or policy specialists primarily engaged in studying diverse aspects of science instruction, iii) K-12 administrators overseeing science curriculum development and implementation across district, county, and state systems, and iv) classroom educators seeking deeper understanding of science education theory and methodology. The structured curriculum combines core science education courses with hands-on research opportunities and participation in state/national science education events. Students will explore contemporary research topics including science learning, pedagogy (physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, environmental science), curriculum design and evaluation (scientific literacy, educational reforms, nature of science), teacher development (professional growth, educator knowledge), and social dimensions (cultural diversity, gender studies). Program requirements include conducting research projects, preparing scholarly articles for publication, presenting at academic conferences, and mastering digital/library research tools.
