Established in 1980, the Graduate Program in Genetics operates as a collaborative initiative between Stony Brook University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory, leveraging their collective strengths in genetic research. With approximately 100 faculty members, the program covers a broad spectrum of expertise—from foundational research using classic animal, plant, and microbial models to pioneering investigations into behavior, cancer, and human diseases. Students benefit from exceptional training opportunities that mirror genetics' increasingly vital role in contemporary biological and biomedical science. For example, while traditional mutagenesis studies with model organisms remain important, the burgeoning field of genomics is generating vast amounts of data, uncovering the genetic networks and evolutionary connections across all life forms. Findings from both conventional and innovative approaches highlight genetics' pivotal role in understanding how genes influence biological functions and evolutionary mechanisms. Additionally, genetics provides valuable insights into disease-causing genetic abnormalities and the potential applications of gene products and genetic engineering to enhance human health.
