The Department of Civil Engineering within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences provides graduate programs culminating in MS and PhD degrees, along with a graduate certificate. These programs aim to educate future civil engineers who will drive innovation, create cutting-edge technologies, and implement creative solutions to enhance the safety, durability, and eco-friendliness of essential infrastructure. Students can explore diverse civil engineering disciplines through a comprehensive curriculum. Faculty members engage in pioneering research, partnering with graduate students on both practical and theoretical projects.

Research areas include designing and assessing materials, components, and frameworks to create groundbreaking, eco-conscious, and secure infrastructure. Investigations cover structural performance during disasters, intelligent and responsive materials/structures, and the creation of advanced computational methods.

Qualification Requirements

A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or a related field such as another engineering discipline, physical science, or mathematics.
A grade point average of at least B or equivalent in engineering, mathematics, and science courses.
Three (3) letters of recommendation
Completion and submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test. Stony Brook University's test code is 2548, for Civil Engineering it's 1102
For non-native speakers of English, submission of the TOEFL or IELTS test.
Acceptance by both the Civil Engineering Graduate Program and the Graduate School.
An applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale.
IELTS: Overall score of 6.5, with no subsection recommended to be below 6
TOEFL: 90 for admission to a doctoral program
