The Department of Civil Engineering within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences provides graduate programs culminating in MS and PhD degrees, along with a graduate certificate. Students can explore a comprehensive curriculum with specialized studies across key civil engineering disciplines. Faculty members engage in advanced research, collaborating closely with graduate students on both practical and theoretical projects.
Research examines the design, optimization, management, and integration of complex adaptive systems, including transportation networks, cyber-physical-human systems, smart interconnected systems, and intelligent automation technologies to develop self-regulating urban infrastructure.

A grade point average of at least B or equivalent in engineering, mathematics, and science courses.
Three (3) letters of recommendation
Completion and submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test. Stony Brook University's test code is 2548, for Civil Engineering it's 1102
For non-native speakers of English, submission of the TOEFL or IELTS test.
Acceptance by both the Civil Engineering Graduate Program and the Graduate School.
An applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale.
IELTS: Overall score of 6.5, with no subsection recommended to be below 6
TOEFL: 90 for admission to a doctoral program
