The Chemistry Department, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts in Teaching Chemistry, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. M.A.T. candidates must enroll through the School of Professional Development. Ph.D. students can pursue dissertation research across various chemistry disciplines aligned with faculty expertise or explore interdisciplinary subjects with guidance from other programs. Collaborative initiatives offer optional specializations in chemical physics and chemical biology.

Advances in laser technology for molecular structure and dynamics research have transformed molecular spectroscopy and dynamics studies. Scientists can now examine atomic and molecular structures and interactions with unprecedented precision. This program investigates systems from simple atoms to complex polymers using laser spectroscopy, exploring phenomena like nonlinear radiation interactions, excited state configurations, energy transfer processes, and photochemical reactions. Researchers employ diverse techniques including luminescence spectroscopy, multiphoton ionization, Raman spectroscopy, and vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy to deepen our comprehension of atomic and molecular behavior.
