The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences provides an advanced undergraduate program culminating in a Bachelor of Science degree. First-year students at Stony Brook can choose clinical laboratory sciences as their preliminary major. Students also have the opportunity to pursue a dual major combining clinical laboratory sciences with biology, along with a part-time study option. Professionals in this field employ advanced instrumentation and specialized techniques to examine biological samples, generating crucial information for disease detection, prevention, and management. These analytical methods also support organ transplantation, medication level monitoring, forensic investigations, genetic research, and scientific studies. The curriculum currently features two focused tracks (Forensic Medical Diagnostics and Clinical Cytogenetics) within its standard clinical laboratory program. While most graduates find employment in hospital labs, diverse career paths exist in research, product development, manufacturing, sales support, public health agencies, and private enterprises. Attractive compensation, professional growth potential, and broad scientific training prepare graduates for success across multiple scientific disciplines. NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences) grants accreditation to this program.
