The business program provides students with a comprehensive grounding in core business principles and practices. Alongside studies in statistics, decision sciences, and general management, learners explore the basics of four key business areas: accounting, finance, marketing, or management and operations. Students can choose to focus their studies on one of these four functional areas, with the specialized knowledge helping them secure careers in their chosen field. Additionally, business students must complete a minor in a non-business discipline. Established in 1988, Stony Brook's Business Management major equips students with broad expertise across all business domains, preparing them for various leadership and professional roles. Graduates pursue careers in manufacturing management, consulting, financial services, sales leadership, marketing, global commerce, and HR management. Since its launch, the program has consistently expanded and currently ranks as the university's third most popular undergraduate major. Industry leaders encourage business students to complement their studies with liberal arts education, and Stony Brook's program combines both to develop well-rounded professionals for today's competitive markets. The curriculum allows specialization in accounting, finance, operations management, or marketing, while also covering business statistics, decision-making methodologies, and general management principles.
