The Environmental Studies program, culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree, equips students with critical thinking abilities, communication expertise, and comprehensive knowledge to tackle multifaceted environmental challenges. This major allows students to concentrate their studies on particular areas of interest while recognizing that environmental solutions require interdisciplinary approaches. The curriculum blends methodologies from social sciences, engineering, natural sciences, and humanities to examine the scientific, legal, socioeconomic, and ethical dimensions of environmental concerns. Graduates gain preparation for advanced studies and careers in diverse fields including environmental law, conservation, science communication, sustainable management, documentary filmmaking, and public policy.
All majors must complete a specialization area to demonstrate focused expertise, along with practical experience through research projects, internships, or fieldwork. Administered by the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, the program offers additional resources including a Living Learning Center with dedicated study spaces for both residential and commuting students. This facility, part of the Science and Society College, hosts specialized programming like faculty research seminars and tailored coursework. Note: Students cannot simultaneously pursue both the major and minor in Environmental Studies.
