The Art Department provides three major programs: Art History and Criticism, Studio Art, and Media/Art/Culture. These flexible programs not only give students significant choice in their studies but also typically meet prerequisites for graduate school or professional careers in the arts. Additionally, the department offers three minor options: Art History, Studio Art, and Digital Arts (refer to the separate DIA minor listing in this Bulletin). The Art History and Criticism program examines visual culture across historical periods and global regions. Students begin with a comprehensive introduction to art history, then majors can either focus on a specific area or continue exploring diverse artistic traditions, from ancient to contemporary, spanning the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. The curriculum covers traditional mediums like painting and sculpture alongside modern forms such as digital art and photography, while also incorporating museum and gallery studies through coursework and internships.

Media/Art/Culture combines art history, film studies, and digital media production in an interdisciplinary approach. This program investigates the relationships between media, technology, and art within various cultural contexts. Students critically analyze digital art and media's role in society while gaining hands-on experience in digital creation, including photography, video, sound, and interactive media. The curriculum promotes collaborative, project-based learning that blends theory and practice, equipping students with skills for modern creative careers. We aim to develop thoughtful global citizens who can navigate and positively influence our technology-driven world.

Studio Art focuses on developing artistic skills and creative practice. Students begin with core studies in drawing, digital media, and design before specializing in one of three tracks: painting/drawing/printmaking, photography/digital media, or sculpture/ceramics. While concentrating in their chosen area, students can explore other disciplines through electives. The program emphasizes connecting studio practice with art historical knowledge to enrich creative work. With access to exhibitions, internships, and faculty guidance, Studio Art majors prepare for graduate programs or professional artistic careers.
