The combined JD/Ph.D. program enables students to prepare for careers in academia, public policy, and private practice by engaging with contemporary theoretical and policy discussions. These include: evolving legal and philosophical perspectives on First Amendment rights, economic and regulatory aspects of media and communications, issues concerning government-citizen interactions (particularly regarding surveillance and data analytics), and cultural implications of digital transformation. Such complex topics benefit from an interdisciplinary approach that merges communication studies' methodologies with legal education's distinctive strengths - including doctrinal knowledge, legal writing proficiency, and practical policy training.
