A joint degree program (JDP) allows students to simultaneously pursue two graduate degrees through a specially designed curriculum. These programs are created through collaboration between academic departments and must receive approval from the deans of the involved schools. Each JDP establishes clear guidelines regarding admissions, academic advising, course requirements, and tuition policies. One key benefit is that students can apply a certain number of credit hours toward both degrees' residency requirements, decreasing the total credits needed. However, Ph.D. candidates in a joint program cannot apply a Stanford master's degree or transferred credits toward their doctoral residency. The Master of Public Policy (M.P.P.) is a two-year professional program exclusively available to current Stanford graduate students or alumni who graduated within the past three years. M.P.P. candidates must fulfill standard graduate degree requirements along with specific Public Policy department requirements, submit an approved study plan using the Program Proposal for a Master's Degree form, and complete their degree within the established timeframe.
