Stanford's Physics graduate program offers students the chance to engage in cutting-edge research across multiple departments, including Physics and Applied Physics in H&S, Particle Physics & Astrophysics and Photon Sciences at SLAC, as well as within the Engineering and Medicine schools. The program combines research with academic coursework, seminar participation, teaching experiences, and student-led initiatives. To earn a Physics Ph.D., students must complete two primary components: graduate-level courses and program milestones. This requires a minimum of 135 units (with potential transfer credits up to 45 units) from Stanford coursework and research. Typically, Physics graduate students dedicate one to two years to coursework before focusing on research for their thesis and doctoral degree. Additionally, completing at least three quarters of teaching is mandatory for the Physics Ph.D.
