Our research focuses on creating accurate models that explain the relationship between comprehension and production in adult language processing, as well as how children learn language. The Stanford Department of Linguistics boasts a vibrant group of psycholinguistics researchers. Faculty and students work together to explore the cognitive mechanisms and representations involved in language production and comprehension for both adults and children. Much of this work is interdisciplinary, connecting various fields within cognitive science, such as how probabilistic data, memory, and attention influence language use and understanding across different languages. Grounded in strong theoretical foundations, our research emphasizes language as a human social tool for communication and interpretation.
