The Latin American history graduate program focuses on two primary periods: colonial and modern times. Over the past ten years, doctoral candidates have investigated diverse topics such as Mexican migration patterns, national park establishment in Brazil and Argentina, inflation's historical impact, and Brazil's colonial frontier settlements. Graduates since 2010 have obtained tenure-track positions at institutions like Colgate and NC State, teaching roles at smaller colleges such as St. Thomas University, along with postdoctoral opportunities and visiting professor appointments. Faculty members teach various courses from introductory lectures to specialized seminars on topics like Modern Mexican/Brazilian history and regional environmental studies. Typically, PhD candidates complete their degrees within 4-6 years, though duration depends on prior academic background and specific language/research demands of their chosen specialization.
