The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is designed mainly for those pursuing careers in research, cutting-edge development, or academia. PhD candidates receive comprehensive training in Aeronautics and Astronautics fundamentals through coursework while conducting focused research in a specific field, ultimately producing a dissertation. In the near future, vehicles will navigate autonomously while passengers sleep or text. Trains will adjust speeds automatically, operating under the assumption of exclusive track access. Drones will weave through urban landscapes to assess air quality and maintain city operations. These advancements promise enhanced transportation safety and reduced environmental impact. Yet this evolving mobility landscape must be safeguarded against cyber threats. Malicious actors will target communications between autonomous vehicles rather than stationary computer systems. Collaborating with Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Physics disciplines, we're developing countermeasures against these emerging transportation vulnerabilities. Ensuring cybersecurity in transportation won't be achieved through single solutions. Effective protection will demand legal frameworks to deter signal interference, social norms condemning such harmful actions, and crucially, technological innovations like enhanced satellite navigation, message verification systems, smart antenna arrays, and advanced motion sensors to harden vehicle systems.
