The Earth Systems Program offers an interdisciplinary environmental science degree. Students explore and conduct independent research on intricate environmental challenges stemming from human actions combined with natural Earth system processes. Those pursuing Earth Systems develop expertise in scientific, economic, and policy domains essential for addressing the planet's most urgent environmental issues, joining a cohort of scientists, professionals, and informed citizens who employ systematic, cross-disciplinary problem-solving approaches. To become impactful contributors to these solutions, students require comprehensive yet specialized education. Accordingly, the curriculum includes foundational courses in biology, calculus, chemistry, geology, physics, economics, policy, and statistics. Following this broad preparation, students specialize in one of six concentrations: biosphere studies, energy systems, environmental economics and policy, land management, sustainable food production, or ocean science. The program additionally mandates a 270-hour internship, providing practical experience through supervised projects in field research, laboratory work, government agencies, or private sector initiatives.
