The Conducting Concentration offers undergraduate Music Majors a specialized track in conducting, covering all facets of the discipline with an emphasis on either instrumental or choral direction. Students progress through foundational, intermediate, and advanced conducting courses, gaining hands-on rehearsal and performance experience that culminates in a senior-year Concentration Project. Those pursuing this path are urged to engage in conducting workshops and masterclasses, observe professional concerts and rehearsals, immerse themselves in the live music world, and assist in leading one of Stanford's major ensembles. Additionally, they should hone advanced keyboard proficiency, explore opera, song literature, musical theater, and diction courses—especially for those drawn to operatic or theatrical pursuits—while fostering community connections, enriching musical networks, initiating collaborations, and potentially establishing new artistic communities.
