Engage in academic studies across all levels focusing on French language, cultures, literatures, and intellectual traditions. The Department delivers rigorous instruction in French and/or Italian literary history, theory, and criticism while pioneering connections between literature and broader disciplines like philosophy, anthropology, history of science, and cultural studies. Our faculty's diverse backgrounds—spanning psychology, anthropology, art history, continental and analytic philosophy alongside literary studies—reflect this interdisciplinary approach. Students can explore coursework at every level in the languages, cultures, literatures, and intellectual histories of both French and Italian traditions. For those considering international study, the Department actively supports the Overseas Studies Program in Paris and Florence. Open to all students who meet language prerequisites, these programs expand learning beyond traditional classrooms, offering transformative cultural and personal experiences.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
