Delve profoundly and gratifyingly into the extensive heritage of English literature, spanning both historical and contemporary works. Pursuing English studies at Stanford means immersing yourself -- profoundly and gratifyingly -- in this vast literary tradition. Our curriculum features diverse courses covering renowned authors, the evolution of literary forms, theoretical approaches, digital media, and creative composition. With its focus on analytical reasoning and textual analysis, the English major serves as exceptional groundwork for various careers such as education, media, legal practice, editing, healthcare, and commerce. English students also acquire essential analytical techniques through three foundational course categories: poetry, prose, and critical methods. This foundation provides contextual understanding and prepares students for our department's extensive elective offerings.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
