An interdisciplinary undergraduate program designed to foster a comprehensive grasp of American culture and society in their full complexity. The American Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary major tailored for self-directed learners. This curriculum equips students with a nuanced perspective of the United States, encompassing its rich diversity and intricate nature. Grounded in historical, social scientific, literary, artistic, and ethnic studies coursework, it encourages students to formulate original, perceptive analyses of America's heritage and contemporary landscape while cultivating sharp analytical skills and innovative problem-solving abilities. With departmental consent, seniors may complete their studies with an honors research capstone project.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
