The Master of Science in Education program for Childhood and Childhood Special Education (Career Change) is an intensive course designed for college graduates pursuing a career in special education. This program equips participants for both initial and professional certification as Special Education Teachers for Grades 1-6. To achieve certification, candidates must successfully complete the New York State Content Specialty Test (CST) in special education. During the foundational general education coursework, Career Change students gain essential knowledge about teaching fundamentals for grades 1-6, along with child development and educational history. The advanced curriculum focuses on developing the competencies, perspectives, and capabilities required to recognize and address various learning and behavioral challenges, from mild to severe, regardless of their origin. The program also emphasizes diagnostic assessment, intervention strategies, program design, and evaluation.
