St. John's University offers a selective accelerated program for high-achieving high school seniors, enabling them to pursue a biology major while simultaneously qualifying for the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) program at SUNY College of Optometry. This unique pathway lets students earn both their B.S. and O.D. degrees in just seven years instead of the traditional eight.
Following three years of undergraduate studies at St. John's, students transition to SUNY for their O.D. studies. The first year of optometry coursework counts toward completing remaining bachelor's degree requirements. The full four-year O.D. program at SUNY leads to the professional doctorate.
This intensive program provides significant savings, eliminating one year of tuition, transportation, and textbook expenses. Students benefit from ongoing academic support from both institutions throughout all seven years. Important to note: SUNY requires a separate application, and acceptance into their program isn't automatic.
To Qualify, applicants must: Meet our minimum high school or transfer academic requirement; Have a TOEFL of 80 or higher/IELTS of 6.5 or higher/Duolingo of 105+ or higher/SAT EWR 440 or higher. International students are encouraged to submit their application for admission and all required credentials by May 1 for fall semester admission and November 1 for spring semester admission.
