St. John's University's Adolescent Education Advanced Certificate Program equips graduates to teach adolescents with disabilities in grades 7 through 12. This program trains educators to master subject content, teaching methodologies, and cultural awareness while developing specialized skills to meet the academic and social needs of students with disabilities. Coursework focuses on cultivating the competencies, mindsets, and capabilities necessary to recognize and address learning challenges and behavioral issues. Participants gain diverse instructional experiences, with particular emphasis on effective teaching approaches and comprehensive strategies for designing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs for exceptional students.
Graduates become eligible for New York State's initial or professional certification in special education, contingent upon successful completion of all state-required examinations, training programs, workshops, and classroom teaching requirements. The program consists of 24 credit hours in total.
