The discipline of Electrical and Computer Engineering is at the core of today's technology-driven society. Personal computers, computer-communications networks, integrated circuits, optical technologies, digital signal processors and wireless communications systems have revolutionized the way people live and work. Lyle prepares students to be creative by providing a solid background in the fundamentals of science and engineering without compromising the practical aspects of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Essential entrepreneurial know-how, interpersonal skills and an understanding of the importance of lifelong learning complement the educational experience of students at SMU. Lyle Electrical and Computer Engineering students will leave the program with not only a wide-ranging technical background but also professional and social leadership proficiency that employers seek and require when hiring new graduates.
Students in Lyle's master's in Electrical Engineering program learn from faculty experts whose research areas in photonics, cognitive wireless networks, statistical signal processing, intelligent systems and more cover each dynamic element of Electrical Engineering and opportunities for the future.
Completion of a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association or completion of an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing. Each program has additional information on appropriate academic backgrounds required for admission into that program.
A minimum GPA of 3.000 on a 4.000 scale for all previous undergraduate and graduate studies.
In addition to meeting the Lyle School of Engineering admission requirements for an M.S. degree, applicants are required to satisfy this additional requirement: a B.S. degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline.
All international students whose native language is not English and who have not graduated from an American university must submit a minimum TOEFL English language proficiency test score before being considered for admission, as follows:
550 – paper-based examination.
213 – computer-based examination.
80– Internet-based examination overall score
A score of 6.5 on the IELTS English language proficiency examination is acceptable in place of the above scores for the TOEFL examination.
