The master's degree in art therapy counseling integrates academic coursework, hands-on practicum training, and scholarly research. We aim to deliver immersive educational experiences that develop culturally sensitive, innovative approaches to art therapy theory, critical thinking, and practical implementation. Our aspiration is for art therapy professionals to nurture imaginative, equitable, and thriving communities. The SIUE art therapy program strives to equip emerging art therapists with foundational competencies across knowledge acquisition, skill development, and professional conduct, aligning with ACATE Educational Standards. Rooted in the Department of Art and Design, the curriculum prioritizes artistic creation. With intentionally limited cohort sizes and a strong focus on experiential education, the program admits just 10 students each autumn to maintain personalized mentorship. Benefits of choosing SIUE encompass access to graduate assistantships featuring tuition support and stipends, diverse clinical placement options across urban, suburban, and rural environments, and engagement with a dynamic local arts culture. Our intimate learning environment features close faculty-student interaction and regular opportunities to learn from distinguished visiting practitioners. Through annual conferences featuring renowned national experts, students explore varied theoretical frameworks and therapeutic methodologies.
