Sociologists employ objective, data-driven approaches to examine how societal factors influence human actions. Their research enables us to develop impactful policies, create fairer institutions, and guide family dynamics that uplift entire populations rather than select privileged groups. Essentially, sociologists drive meaningful progress.

The core mission of social work is to strengthen societal functioning and advance community growth across all levels. Practicing social workers:

Serve as agents of transformation for individuals, families, groups, organizations, and neighborhoods
Work to improve living conditions and social environments
Champion those facing discrimination or socioeconomic disadvantages
Connect people with essential resources and support services

At SIUE, we emphasize practical learning. Students engage in immersive experiences, applying classroom knowledge to actual situations - from assisting communities with data collection to proposing strategies for community enhancement.

Specialization options include:

Diversity and Social Justice: Internships with nonprofits teach grant writing and resource acquisition to advance equity initiatives.
Employment Relations: Field placements help students discover methods to boost workplace engagement and efficiency.
