The SIUE School of Nursing develops tomorrow's nursing professionals who embody the university's core principles. This program trains students as general nursing practitioners, qualifying graduates to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam to become registered nurses. This state-recognized curriculum also serves as a stepping stone for advanced nursing education. Nursing encompasses safeguarding health, enhancing wellness, preventing disease and injury, easing suffering through diagnosing and treating human conditions, and championing care for people across all life stages and community settings (per the ANA's 2003 Social Policy Statement). The nursing curriculum integrates liberal arts and sciences, with specialized coursework focused in the final three years. Undergraduate studies emphasize critical thinking, effective communication, professional roles, cultural competence, and ethical practice. Hands-on clinical training and lab work form essential components, with regional healthcare partners across Illinois and the St. Louis metro area collaborating to offer practical experience opportunities.
