China and Japan boast profound, time-honored civilizations while maintaining growing global significance. Those enrolled in the interdisciplinary East Asian Language and Culture Specialization will develop fluency in either Chinese or Japanese, complemented by coursework exploring these nations' cultural heritage. Through departmental and cross-campus classes, students will establish foundational understanding of historical, cultural, and literary traditions associated with their selected language. The program cultivates cross-cultural analytical skills through examining belief systems, media forms, traditions, and material culture. As language proficiency advances, students will analyze structural differences between Chinese/Japanese and English, gaining insights into linguistic principles generally and these specific languages particularly.
East Asian studies graduates pursue diverse professional paths across public and private institutions, domestically or internationally. The specialization's adaptable structure permits concurrent study of additional disciplines, significantly expanding both academic perspectives and career possibilities.
