Historical research aims to understand how we arrived at the present day. Scholars examine both prominent figures and everyday people whose combined efforts have shaped our future. At SDState, history students engage in scholarly work, exploring the rise and fall of civilizations, the causes and conclusions of conflicts, and humanity's journey from nomadic lifestyles to sophisticated agricultural, industrial, and intellectual societies. This exploration includes analyzing human motivations, behavioral patterns, and the development of concepts alongside technological advancements. We also investigate national growth trajectories and international relations.
History students cultivate valuable skills—formulating insightful inquiries, performing investigative work to address them, and articulating findings effectively through speech and writing. These competencies open doors to diverse professional paths in education, legal fields, media, government, information management, and commerce, as well as advanced academic pursuits.
