This three-year program offers comprehensive training in playwriting, theater history, performance theory, dramatic literature, and script analysis. The intensive curriculum, combined with production work and thesis requirements, ensures mastery of all aspects of theatrical direction. SIU's Theater graduate program delivers highly specialized, advanced education in one of six concentrations. Students gain practical, hands-on experience in their selected discipline, emerging as skilled professionals by the program's conclusion.

Qualification Requirements

2.7 (on a grading scale with 4.0=A, approximately a B- average) on the last two years of Bachelor's coursework, 3.0 on all previous graduate work (approximately a B average). An applicant was awarded a Master's degree at an accredited college/university in the United States and has been in residence in the United States continuously prior to application to SIU (not out of the country for more than one calendar year). You have a minimum of 60 graded (A, B, C) hours of recent coursework completed at an accredited college / university in the United States with continuous residence in the United States prior to application at SIU. Pass / Fail, Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory, or Proficiency credit is not acceptable. The English language requirement may be met by submitting: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 80 on the internet-based TOEFL, 6.5 on the IELTS
To apply, students must fill out the online application for Admission to Graduate Study in Theater. Applicants for graduate studies in theater must satisfy the minimum requirements of the Graduate School before being admitted to the school. The application includes a statement of purpose, transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate coursework together with three (3) letters of recommendation from former teachers or supervisors.
There are additional requirements established by each of the areas of study in the M.F.A. in Theater Program. Applicants in the directing area are required to submit materials that are representative of their previous theater work and/or indicate an aptitude for stage direction (including promptbooks, programs, reviews, photos, video tapes or casebooks from previous directing efforts). At this time, each applicant will work with actors on a directing scene to demonstrate their ability to analyze the scene and work with actors. Applicants in the costume, lighting, scene design and technical direction areas are required to submit portfolio samples of their work. Applicants in the playwriting area must submit approximately two to two-and-a-half hours of written material consisting of one full-length play and/or several significant short pieces.
