As an Environmental Studies major at Seattle University, you can: Customize your degree path. Select from four focus areas: Urban Sustainability, Policy, Politics and Justice, Environmental Education and Communication, or Ecological Systems – or create your own concentration. Examine human-environment connections – tackling challenges affecting diverse ecosystems, from urban centers to wilderness areas. Approach sustainability issues through an equity-focused framework – developing foundational knowledge in natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Acquire data interpretation methods, critical thinking abilities, and effective communication strategies to analyze environmental issues, collaborate with various groups, and guide communities toward sustainable practices. Combine fieldwork and coursework throughout the Puget Sound region and other locations. The Urban Sustainability focus area responds to today's critical need to create eco-friendly cities and cultivate sustainable urban living. The curriculum provides foundational urban planning knowledge along with elective courses examining both the physical and social aspects of sustainable communities. Seattle's environmentally innovative urban landscape and surrounding areas serve as ideal settings for studying urban sustainability, presenting numerous opportunities for fieldwork, practical applications, and professional internships.
