The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's (SAIC) Performance Department was established with an innovative approach, standing out nationally as one of the few dedicated contemporary performance art programs within an art school offering both undergraduate and graduate studies focused on performance practice and research.
The department constantly adapts to emerging trends within and beyond the discipline, striving to reflect modern perspectives on viewing and interpreting our world through the lenses of both students and faculty.
Our program merges hands-on studio work with thorough critical analysis and historical context to shape artistic decisions and creative output. Through cross-disciplinary methods, we explore diverse performance formats such as live action, installation art, movement studies, tactical and site-specific performances, digital interactivity, and experimental writing. We inspire students to approach their artistic practice as a multidisciplinary endeavor that can intersect with various departments including Fiber and Material Studies, Sculpture, Fashion Design, Art and Technology Studies, Film, Video, New Media, Animation, Sound, and Ceramics.
