The Department of American Ethnic Studies offers a Black Studies program designed to deepen understanding of African American experiences. This major explores the historical narratives, cultural expressions, achievements, and challenges within Black communities. The department maintains that studying African American heritage fosters greater appreciation for one's own cultural background.
Program Objectives-
Graduates will analyze the evolution of racial discrimination in America and its societal consequences.
Students will demonstrate how American history encompasses not only white narratives but also significant African American influences across social, political, cultural, and economic spheres.
Participants will cultivate an academic environment where individuals from all backgrounds can learn about Black global experiences, promoting diversity awareness as they grow into engaged citizens and community leaders.
Students will develop analytical projects showcasing their comprehension of African diasporic histories, cultural connections, and social landscapes across continents.
Graduates of high schools or equivalent are eligible for admission, with the equivalent of a GPA of 2.0 or better.
Students must be 18 years or older by the start of the semester without restrictions.
