The Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking faculty at San Jose State University engage deeply with the contemporary art world, showcasing their work across national and international platforms. Their artistic practices span diverse styles, from realistic depictions to abstract forms, and from conceptual explorations to environmental installations. Graduate students receive guidance to cultivate their unique creative visions through faculty mentorship, independent studio projects, gallery showcases, connections with the Bay Area's professional art scene, and discussions on modern artistic theories in graduate seminars.
Dedicated studio and classroom spaces support painting and drawing, complemented by fully equipped workshops for wood and metalwork. Printmaking graduate students benefit from access to four spacious studio-classrooms, alongside specialized prep rooms for intaglio and lithography presses. A papermaking laboratory further enhances their resources. The printmaking facilities include three intaglio presses and four lithography presses, accommodating both monoprint and edition work on stones or aluminum plates. The screen printing studio features a sizable vacuum-exposure table for plate and stencil preparation. Additionally, a photo darkroom equipped with graphic arts cameras and enlargers enables printmakers to explore various photo-based techniques across all print media.
